Program of study for 1st grade

The CCSS core curriculum for 1st grade covers a range of categories, including:

  • Number and place value
Students learn how to read, write, order, and compare numbers up to 100. They also learn how to count forwards and backwards in steps of 2, 3 and 5.

  • Addition and subtraction
Using number bonding and otherwise, students learn how to add and subtract whole numbers with up to 2 digits. They study number bonding up to 100.

  • Multiplication and division
Students consider multiplication via repeat addition. They are introduced to division by dividing objects into groups. Students learn how to multiply and divide whole numbers by 2 and 10. They are introduced to the two, five and ten times tables.

  • Fractions
Students are introduced to the concept of fractions. They learn to recognize and name halves and quarters, understanding that they represent parts of a whole or a set. They learn to calculate half a number and a quarter of a number.

  • Measurement
Students learn to measure using appropriate units, compare and order measurements, and solve simple measurement problems. They also begin to understand the concept of time, including telling time to the hour and half-hour.

  • Shapes
Students identify 2D and 3D shapes by name. They study some properties of 2D shapes including the number of sides and corners.

  • Position & direction
Students begin to explore shapes that are rotated through a quarter, a half or three-quarters.

  • Statistics
Students explore pictographs, tally charts and block diagrams and use them to identify facts.

In addition to these specific categories, pupils also develop their ability to solve real life problems using the mathematical principles they have been introduced to.
