4th grade math

Program of study for 4th grade

The CCSS core curriculum for 4th grade covers a range of categories, including:

  • Number and place value
Students further develop their understanding of place value, including numbers up to one million. They work with larger numbers and deepen their knowledge of number patterns and sequences. They also explore factors, multiples, prime numbers, and square numbers.

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Students continue to refine their arithmetic skills and mental calculations. They learn efficient methods for mental calculations and develop strategies for solving multi-step problems involving these operations. They also begin to work with decimal numbers and fractions in calculations.

  • Fractions and Decimals
Students deepen their understanding of fractions and decimals. They learn to compare and order fractions and decimals, convert between these forms, and solve problems involving fractions and decimals. They also explore adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

  • Ratio and proportion
Students will learn about the relationships between two or more quantities. They will also learn how to use ratio and proportion to solve problems.

  • Measurement
Students explore various aspects of measurement, including length, mass, volume, and time. They learn to convert between different units of measurement.

  • Geometry & shapes
Students will learn to identify, classify and describe 2D and 3D shapes and their nets. They explore angles, including right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles. They also learn about lines of symmetry and types of polygons.

  • Position & direction
Students begin to explore transformations, such as reflections, rotations, and translations.

  • Statistics
Students learn to collect and interpret data using tables, charts, and graphs and use them to analyze data and draw conclusions.

  • Algebra
Students will learn about basic algebraic variables and their use in simple equations. They apply these skills to formulae for perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.

  • Problem-solving
Students will learn how to solve mathematical problems using a variety of methods. They will also learn how to apply mathematical concepts to real-world problems.
